Driving the future of Digital Dentistry

SYS Systems, the UK platinum partner of 3D printing leader Stratasys, is helping to revolutionise the world of dentures through a groundbreaking partnership between Prime Dental Laboratory and Zenith Dental Clinic. Discover their story below.

A Digital Denture Breakthrough

Based in Ilkeston, Derbyshire, Prime Dental Laboratory has built a reputation for its specialism in removable prosthetics and implant-supported dentures. According to co-owner and Clinical Dental Technician Tim Jackson, the move to digital has been transformative.

Prime Dental has been an early adopter of the Stratasys J5 DentaJet, supplied and supported by SYS Systems. The introduction and CE-marking of TrueDent, a resin material developed specifically for realistic, permanent 3D printed dentures, has had a profound impact on both clinical outcomes and lab productivity.

A Dentist’s Journey from Traditional to Digital

One of Prime Dental’s closest collaborators is Zenith Dental Clinic, based in Nottingham. Principal Dentist, Dr Karan Maini, was initially sceptical of digital methods, but has now fully embraced the technology and wouldn’t go back.

He said: “I had many reservations about digital dentistry in general. I was very much of the mindset that I wanted to do everything traditionally. I didn’t even use a scanner at all.

“After I tried a scanner for the first time, I thought actually, that’s quite good. Then you try another time and it starts to get really interesting. Before you know it, I’ve been introduced to TrueDent and Stratasys and here we are. Every denture I make is now a TrueDent denture.

"This machine is going to change the industry."

The adoption of TrueDent has had a big impact on Zenith and its patients, with reduced chair time and patients being able to get their desired end result within a matter of days rather than weeks.

Tim said: “The Stratasys and the TrueDent material has definitely surpassed expectations. When you start fitting them, the reduced amount of adjustments you need to make on these dentures is unbelievable.

“You can just put a denture in someone’s mouth and after one quick tweak, it’s done. You can almost book too long of an appointment most of the time. It saves a lot of clinic time and for post-processing in the lab, it saves a horrendous amount of time.

I think the TrueDent material is the best printer resin on the market. A lot of printer resins we've had experience with are quite brittle, quite soft. We noticed a lot of wear with them. The TrueDent material is just surpassing everything I could have imagined strength-wise, as well as aesthetics.

Transforming Lives, Not Just Smiles

For patients, the difference is immediate – and emotional.

Tim Jackson says, “There’s still a lot of negativity around digital dentures, especially in the industry,” said Tim. “But we’re getting instant patient feedback in the clinics. We’re fitting analogue dentures and then giving them a 3D printed set of dentures as a blind test. Every single time they’re saying the 3D printed dentures are the ones they prefer.”

“They’re all coming back saying that they’re smaller, they’re lighter. None of the dentures made are smaller – they’re either bigger or exactly the same size – but the fact they’re saying they’re lighter and feel more comfortable in their mouth is just a testament to the material.
