Sepura designs, manufactures, and supplies critical communications technology and applications around the world. Their products are used in a variety of rapid response operations, including police, public transport, fire service and ambulance. It is vital that Sepura’s prototypes are accurate can be thoroughly inspected for accuracy, reliability and performance to ensure the highest quality for their customers.

Sepura has invested in the Stratasys’ PolyJet J35 pro 3D printer, supplied by SYS Systems, to reduce the design and development timeframes of their products.

SYS Systems is the platinum partner of Stratasys in the UK, supplying and supporting the full range of world-renowned 3D printing technologies from prototyping through to production.

Project Brief:

Sepura works within some of the most critical industries, including; police, fire rescue and ambulance. It is paramount that they can guarantee quality of their products every single time for the safety and security of their customers.

Sepura were looking for ways to reduce their product development timeframe without sacrificing their quality, and made contact with SYS Systems to explore their 3D printing solutions for rapid prototyping.

“We are often asked to design bespoke solutions to match a particular user need and to develop these in co-operation with customers. We needed the technology to be able to achieve this within tight timeframes,” said Robert Wright, Principal Mechanical Design Engineer at Sepura.

The Solution:

Sepura invested in the Stratasys J35 pro desktop 3D printer, supplied by SYS Systems, Platinum Partner of Stratasys, to produce rapid prototypes of their bespoke communications technology products.

The J35 pro is a desktop 3D printer that can produce prototypes and models accurately, quickly and affordably to streamline and support your product development processes.

“We were already familiar with the benefits of 3D printing having used Stratasys’ PolyJet technology in the past. The J35 Pro adds another important layer to our existing 3D printing capabilities – not only can we now cost-effectively create true-to-life prototype models in-house, but we have also cut our production time by 90%, which is more than we could have ever imagined,” said Robert.

The Benefits:

Investing in a 3D printer from SYS Systems has allowed Sepura to produce realistic and cost-effective prototypes, whilst significantly reducing their product development timeframes. Sepura is now able to ensure speed, accuracy and reliability of their prototypes and subsequent products.

Paul Tindall, Head of R&D at Sepura, explained the benefits of Sepura’s latest investments:

“The J35 Pro provides us with an affordable gateway to accelerate our iteration and validation within the product development processes.

“The variety of materials available with the J35 Pro allows us to create accurate prototypes and means our customers receive a detailed, tangible model they can hold in their hands. We have found Elastico material to be particularly beneficial.

“We are able to produce sealing prototypes that simulate the look, feel and function of rubber and can withstand repeated flexing and bending. The J35 pro gives us the flexibility to be more creative with our designs for our customers.”
